Obituary for Leonard Johnie Berger

Leonard Johnie Berger, age 92 of Huber Heights, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2015 in his residence. He was born in Estill County, Kentucky on October 11, 1923 the son of Charlie & Callie (Rison) Berger. He loved baseball and coached for many years in the Dayton area. He was a life member and past president of the National Amateur Baseball Federation, member of the Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, past president of the Dayton Amateur Baseball Commission, a member of the DABC Class AA Hall of Fame, a member of the Miami Valley Coach’s Association, and coached Stebbins and Wilbur Wright High School Baseball.

He is survived by his daughters Wanda J. Chasteen and Jerald Hall, son Tommy Berger and his wife Kathy, grandchildren Tommy Berger Jr., Joy Chasteen, William Hall, Michelle Pyburn, Gary Hall, Jason Hall, and Lisa Edenfield, 11 great grandchildren, a sister Edna Wilson and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 72 years Opal Fay (Stamper) Berger in 2012, sons Bruce and Leonard Perry Berger, daughter Ruby Berger, a brother Arvil Berger and a sister Wanda Wyatt.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm in the BLESSING-ZERKLE FUNERAL HOME, 11900 N. Dixie Dr. Tipp City, Ohio. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with Pastor Rick Vance officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Tipp City. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Leonard’s memory to Crossroads Hospice, 8069 Washington Village Dr. Dayton, Ohio 45458.
